Learn Chinese
From Social Media Posts

Choose a Learning Path

  • Prioritize posts (*)

Unlock the maximum number of new posts for each character learned.

  • Common characters

Learn Mandarin's most frequently used characters first, even if they're weird grammar characters.

  • Posts + combos

Like the original Prioritize Posts, but sometimes learn two characters at a time.

How does it work?

Each list shows you one character at a time. Along with each character you see:

  • Definition and pronunciation
  • Social media posts that use the character

The posts use only characters you've seen already.

The first few characters won't have very complex posts, since you only know a few characters.

As you progress, though, you quickly start to see how people express themselves in chinese. Talking about their lives, habits, emotions, and more.

Many chinese words are made of multiple characters, and each character can be used in a variety of ways, on their own or in compound words. The posts help you see characters in context, and see the variety of meanings they can take on.

How To get the most out of it?

This is not the most effective way to learn chinese from scratch. But it's an interesting look into the vocabulary of social media. And a fun way to practice from a different angle than textbooks or more traditional learning methods.

If you're genuinely trying to use this to learn more chinese, I would recommend installing a popup dictionary like Yomitan and installing a Mandarin Dictionary. These can help you keep track of the meanings of characters you've learned,

Why three different lists?

Short answer: This is just a fun experiment and having options seemed fun.

Longer answer: I'm very interested by the order that textbooks and apps choose to present chinese characters in. They have to strike a balance between usefullness, ease of understanding, and complexity of the characters themselves. I wanted to see what a learning order that focuses just on getting you to read social media posts as quickly as possible would look like.

After creating the Prioritize Posts list, I wanted to see how it compared to other character learning orders. I found that there's a very different feel when you prioritize social media versus using texbook word clusters or most-common characters. Try for yourself and see!
